What really can be said about a film with “The Beautiful Ones,” “When Doves Cry,” and “Purple Rain” in it? If the surrounding 90 minutes had just been Prince dry-cleaning his scarves, the film would still be a masterpiece by default. Purple Rain is Prince in his prime, at his peak, at his most audacious. It is Prince at his most sensual, his most open and pleading. It is, then, by logical extension, some of the most powerful popular music of the last century, and some of the best we will ever get. That it came alongside a silly, campy picture to enjoy is just a bonus.
